Why Your Redcat Pulls to One Side: Steering Fixes

Diagnose why your Redcat pulls to one side and fix it with trim, linkage, and steering knuckle checks. Know when to stop and replace parts.

Quick answer

Start by centering the steering trim on your transmitter and checking for binding in the steering linkage. If the pull persists, inspect the steering knuckles and links for wear or damage. Replace worn parts like the RER37071 steering knuckle set or the 13864 steering link set if adjustment does not fix the drift.

Separate the symptom from the cause

A Redcat that pulls to one side can feel like the steering is fighting you. Before you touch the trim, confirm the symptom: does it pull only under acceleration, only when braking, or all the time? Does it drift left or right consistently? This tells you whether the problem is in the steering system, the suspension, or the drivetrain. For example, a pull that appears only under power often points to a binding driveshaft or a loose differential, while a constant pull at all speeds usually means the steering linkage or knuckles are worn or misaligned.

Check steering trim and servo centering first

The quickest fix is often the steering trim on your transmitter. Set it to neutral and see if the vehicle tracks straight. If it still pulls, remove the servo horn and re-center the servo, then reattach the horn so the wheels point straight ahead. This ensures the steering system starts from a true center. If the pull returns after a few runs, the servo saver or linkage may be loose or worn. On the EVEREST GEN7 PRO and GEN7 SPORT, the 13864 steering link set includes a high steer curved link and a servo link; if these are bent or have excessive play, they can cause inconsistent steering and a pull.

Inspect steering linkage and knuckles for wear

Worn steering knuckles or links are a common cause of a Redcat pulling to one side. Lift the front of the vehicle and wiggle the wheels to check for play. If the knuckle moves independently of the steering link, the pivot or bearing may be worn. On the MT18, the RER37071 steering knuckle set is made from aluminum and finished in red. Aluminum knuckles resist flex better than stock plastic parts, which can help maintain consistent steering geometry. However, if the knuckle is bent or the bearing seat is ovalized, replacement is the only fix. Also check the tie rods and servo link for bends or stripped threads.

Consider suspension and shock tower alignment

A bent or damaged shock tower can alter suspension geometry and cause the vehicle to pull. On the VOLCANO EPX and EPX PRO, the 08012 shock tower is a direct replacement for either front or rear. If the tower is bent, the shock mounting points shift, changing camber and caster. This can make the vehicle drift to one side, especially over bumps. Inspect the tower for cracks or bends and replace it if needed. Also check that the shocks are not leaking and that the springs are not collapsed on one side, as uneven damping can cause a pull.

Diagnosis: pull to one side

  • Symptom: pulls constantly at all speeds: Check steering trim, servo centering, and linkage for binding or wear. If links are bent or knuckles are worn, replace them. If trim and centering do not fix it, replace worn steering components.
  • Symptom: pulls only under acceleration: Inspect drivetrain for binding, such as a tight diff or bent driveshaft. Also check for uneven tire wear or a loose wheel nut. If drivetrain is smooth, check suspension for sag or damage.
  • Symptom: pulls after a crash: Look for bent shock tower, bent hinge pins, or a bent chassis. Replace any bent parts; straightening is not recommended. If the chassis is bent, it may be time to retire the vehicle or replace the chassis.

Parts that address steering pull

  • RER37071: Redcat Racing RER37071 is a Steering Knuckle Set made from aluminum and finished in red. It is listed as a hop-up and spare part for the MT18, and the set is supplied as one pair. Aluminum knuckles reduce flex and help maintain steering geometry, which can eliminate a pull caused by worn or flexing stock knuckles.
  • 13864: This Redcat Racing steering link set is a spare part for the EVEREST GEN7 PRO and EVEREST GEN7 SPORT vehicles. It includes a high steer curved link and a servo link, supplied as one pair. If the steering links are bent or have play, replacing them restores precise steering and can stop the vehicle from drifting to one side.
  • 08012: This Redcat Racing part 08012 is a front or rear shock tower for select Redcat vehicles. It is designed as a direct replacement spare part to maintain proper suspension geometry and shock mounting. Compatible with Redcat VOLCANO EPX and EPX PRO models (current vehicles). Also fits legacy VOLCANO S30 models. Single piece construction (1 pc) for either front or rear position. A bent shock tower changes suspension geometry and can cause a pull. Replacing it with a genuine part restores correct alignment.
